Ah, time…we all need more of it, Jim! I’ll add that no publishing model will work without creative marketing. Authors publishing with traditional publishers have to market their books, too.

And everyone needs a great book!

Joy, this happens on Amazon, too. It’s unfortunate. I wonder why some books get targeted but others don’t. Any thoughts on that?

I have always been skeptical about Goodreads and the way some of the reviewers there destroy authors’ books. Sometimes, some reviewers will post reviews on books they have not read, and the reviewer will boldly say so, yet, they will post a disparaging review and very low rating for such books. Things like this have made me look at Goodreads reviews with a magnifying glass, so to say. 😎

I’m glad this encourages you, David! I love that!

As for starting early, you might be interested in another article on this site: https://buildbookbuzz.com/book-promotion-timing/

Another reason not to count on reviews from friends and family is that Amazon will block them. Rules state that family members can’t review your book, and Amazon is constantly working to sleuth out connections between authors and friends. When it spots one, it removes the friend’s review. The emphasis on Amazon (life is different on Goodreads…) is honest, objective reviews. Amazon thinks that personal connections will be challenged to be honest, and I can see its point!

Thanks for the comment — I appreciate it!

Yes, she’s a talented writer. Yes, she has one of the biggies backing her. And yes, it’s a good book. My best piece of advice echoes #1; as the old saying goes, “It all starts with story…and in our case a GOOD story.” The second point surprised (and encouraged) me. Who knew one should begin so early? I would have thought it would “burn out” too far out. Good advice. My biggest weakness (and perhaps fear) is not knowing how to build the fan base (read: snag solid emails). That is my next mission. Another valued point: ARC. I have learned this lesson the hard way. Friends/family just simply won’t give it to you straight. No more! Don’t mean to babble, was just encouraged by this article and thought I’d share my two cents. Now, let’s get out there and write!
